Prayers Needed: I’m Going to Be Speaking to 150,000 Prisoners
I don’t normally use my blog as a platform to ask people to pray for me, but this is a big deal: I’m getting the opportunity to speak to 150,000 prisoners.
This month, Boundless published my article, “The Right Time to Tell My Darkest Secret,” in which I talked about overcoming the shame of sexual abuse. Prison Fellowship is the largest prison ministry in the United States, and one of their senior writers read the article. She asked me if I would be willing to write a similar article for their prison newspaper, which has 150,000 readers.
She said, “This material would be particularly relevant because a startling number of prisoners—both men and women—have been survivors of sexual abuse, but it’s virtually impossible to talk about it in a prison setting. I’ve sat on the phone with far too many tough, tattooed men whose experience of abuse sent them spiraling into addiction and crime, and who still have no safe place to address it. In a small way, the newspaper can be a place to acknowledge and provide a godly perspective on taboo topics like this one.”
I feel honored and overwhelmed with this opportunity, and I wanted to ask you to pray for me and the prisoners who will read my article. I lived in a prison of shame before, and those bars don’t break open easily. Please join me in praying that somehow, the words God gives me will help set these men and women free.
