This morning, I was driving my six-year-old daughter to school, and she said, “Daddy, what are we going to talk about?”
As morbid as it may seem, I decided to talk to her about what to do if she’s in a situation where someone is shooting a gun in her school. She wanted to know what kind of person would do that, and I told her that it’s the kind of person whose heart is full of Satan.
“We need to pray and trust Jesus to protect us,” I said, “and we also need to pray for the people who want to do this kind of thing.”
My daughter prayed and said, “I can feel Jesus doing it, Daddy!”
“Doing what?” I asked.
“He’s protecting us, and He’s doing something else.”
“What?”
“I don’t know,” she said, “wait, He just told me: He said He’s washing their hearts.”
It makes me wonder if there’s some terrorist out there whose heart will be washed in the blood of Jesus today – some man or woman who won’t shoot up a school or nightclub or a workplace because a little girl had the faith to pray for her enemies. And then I wonder what other beautiful things God might do in the world today if us grown-ups would follow her lead. It wouldn’t hurt to try it.
“I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven” – Jesus.
